Has anyone replaced the thermostat in the 790? The manual says that it should be replaced every two years...BUT the manual also gives no procedures other than to say "see your John Deere dealer". What's the catch? Why would I need to go to the JD dealer just to replace the thermostat? Does anyone have the procedure for replacing it?

I have a JD 4300 and my manual says the same thing. I replaced the thermostat myself and it's a piece of cake. Just make sure your dealer orders the part for your tractor in your climatic region (I guess thats why they suggest the dealer does it). You will also have to replace a gaskit or two so make sure you order those as well. On the installation make sure the thermostat goes in in the same orientation as the original and that it seats properly. I used the JD parts website to get inspection drawings so I could do it properly. IMHO you can do it yourself if you are in any way mechanically inclined. The change is recommended more for prevention than anything else as my original thermostat is working and operated just fine with no corrosio buildup or other defects. ....
